EV Charger Installation Guide: Everything You Need to Know

๐Ÿ“… Updated June 2026โฑ 8 min readโœ SJR Electech

Electric vehicles are no longer a novelty โ€” they're the future of motoring, and the UK is on track to ban new petrol and diesel car sales entirely. If you're making the switch to an EV (or already have), getting a home charger installed is one of the smartest moves you can make. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before booking your installation.

Types of EV Chargers Explained

Not all EV chargers are the same. There are three main types, and for most homeowners and businesses the right choice is a dedicated Level 2 unit installed by a qualified electrician.

๐Ÿ”‹
Level 1 ยท Slow
3-Pin Plug
~2.3kW
Uses a standard UK 3-pin socket. No installation needed, but very slow โ€” adds roughly 8โ€“10 miles of range per hour. Not suitable as a primary charging method.
โšก
Level 2 ยท Fast
Home / Workplace Wallbox
7kW โ€“ 22kW
The recommended home and workplace solution. Adds 25โ€“100 miles per hour. Installed by a qualified electrician. Most home chargers run at 7kW.
๐Ÿš€
Level 3 ยท Rapid
Public Rapid Charger
50kW โ€“ 350kW
Found at motorway services. Can charge 0โ€“80% in 20โ€“45 minutes. Not suitable for domestic installation โ€” requires commercial 3-phase supply.

Do You Need a Qualified Electrician to Install an EV Charger?

Yes โ€” absolutely. EV charger installation involves connecting directly to your consumer unit, running a dedicated circuit, and ensuring your home's electrical system can handle the additional load. This work must be carried out by a registered electrician and is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations.

The EV Charger Installation Process

  • 1
Survey and AssessmentWe assess your property โ€” consumer unit capacity, available cable routes, installation location, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed.
  • 2
Fixed-Price QuoteWe give you a clear, written fixed-price quote covering all labour, materials and any supplementary work needed. No surprise extras on installation day.
  • 3
Charger SelectionWe can advise on and supply the right charger for your needs โ€” including popular brands like Easee, Ohme, Pod Point and Zappi. Or supply your own and we'll install it.
  • 4
Installation DayMost standard home EV charger installations take 3โ€“5 hours. We run a dedicated cable from your consumer unit, mount the unit securely, and connect everything safely.
  • 5
Testing and CommissioningWe test the full installation, verify the charger is communicating correctly, and walk you through how to use it โ€” including setting up the app if applicable.
  • 6
CertificationYou'll receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the documentation needed to claim any available government grants.
๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

A smart EV charger can be programmed to charge during off-peak electricity tariff hours โ€” typically overnight โ€” which can significantly reduce your charging costs. Some EV-specific tariffs like Octopus Go offer very low overnight rates specifically for this purpose.

Choosing the Right EV Charger

Smart vs Standard Chargers

Since March 2022, all new EV charger installations in the UK are required to include smart functionality. Smart chargers connect to your Wi-Fi, allow scheduling via a smartphone app, and take advantage of off-peak electricity tariffs.

Tethered vs Untethered

A tethered charger has a cable permanently attached โ€” convenient as you just plug straight into your car. An untethered charger uses your own cable โ€” useful if you might change EV brands.

Power Output: 7kW vs 22kW

Most home installations use a 7kW (32A single phase) charger โ€” sufficient for overnight charging for all current EVs. A 22kW charger requires a three-phase electricity supply, which most homes don't have.
